Like most of LJ Smith's characters, there wasn't a birthday given for Stefan so we're only let to guess which stars spin his world.^^ His sensitive, emotional nature pushes my instincts in the direction of a water sign, but for the sake of argument I'm listing a short description of each sign and an explanation why or why I do not believe he fits there.

Aries
People born under this sign are natural leaders. They have the charisma to organize enormous numbers of people together to accomplish any task. Always ready for an adventure, an Arien loves to try something new and will drop everything in a second to run off to the next event. Other Aries characteristics: impulsiveness, honesty, risk-taking, bossiness, extroversion, selfishness and poor judge of character.

I don't think I'm alone in saying that I highly doubt that Stefan's an Aries. He thinks before he acts and is very much an introvert. There's just nothing fiery about his personality.

Taurus
Ruled by Venus, Taureans love the comfort of material things. They love security and have the strong work ethic needed to gain what they want and need, making them very stable partners. These people are definitely not the going out type, preferring to stay at home and veg with people they're comfortable with. Other Taurus characteristics: stubbornness, a conservative outlook, patience, attentiveness, resourcefulness, self-indulgence, and insensitivity.

While Stefan definitely shares some common traits with Taurus, such as the need for security and his rather conservative nature, I don't see anything to prove that he'd have the great materialistic streak needed for me to place him here.

Gemini
Very talkative and lively, Geminis are definitely on the bubblier side of the zodiac. Their ruler Mercury blesses them with the gift of gab and a wide range of interests. You can't pin a Gemini down on one topic for too long, for they bore quite easily. They're real social animals and enjoy talking to people from all walks of life. Other Gemini characteristics: charm, inventiveness, versatility, restlessness, impatience, impracticality, a noncommittal nature and a love for gossipy.

I wonder if I even need to explain my rejection of this sign as a possibility. Stefan was the type to carefully choose his friends and ideals, remaining focused on them forever. Not a Gemini. Definitely not a Gemini.

Cancer
Representing the home and mothering principle, Cancers are very home-loving and protective individuals. They're very nurturing and maternal, no matter what their gender and will take care of their loved ones for life. They love security and are very sensitive and emotional people. You win the loyalty of a Cancer, and you're set for life! Other Cancer characteristics: tenacity, intuitiveness, compassion, sensitivity, protectiveness, possessiveness, moodiness, a tendency to hold grudges and introspection.

Cancer is my top choice for Stefan's sun sign. I feel a very big water energy coming from him and he fits the above characteristics to a T. Plus I've always been drawn to Cancers for friends and otherwise. ^^ Hooray for Stefan!

Leo
As bright as the sun, Leos are tough to miss. They love to be the center of attention and want to be treated like kings. Since they're very generous and loyal once you let them keep the spotlight, their need to be adored can be forgiven. They definitely have a flair for the dramatic and enjoy expensive things... as any member of royalty would! Other Leo characteristics: Honesty, cheerfulness, friendliness, a good sense of responsibility, stubbornness, sulkiness, boastfulness and standoffishness.

Since Stefan likes to keep a low profile, he's definitely not a Leo. Elena seems very leonine. But not Stefan, not at all.

Virgo
Virgos are the fabled perfectionists of the zodiac. They have a great attention to detail, and can be almost fussy when at their worst. They do possess a tremendous sense of duty though, and always come to the aid of their fellow man. They're very logical and practical, thinkers instead of feelers. Other Virgo qualities: sympathy, well-organized, dedication, charm, criticism, irritability, and the inclination to be overly demanding.

Stefan could believably be a Virgo, but it's not where I would place him to be. He's very self-critical and has the sense of duty of a Virgo, but I just can't see an overly practical Virgo still mourning over a lost love five centuries later. Stefan's just too sensitive for the Virgo ideal.

Libra
As rulers of the sign of partnership, the average Libran cares about the opinions of others... a LOT. They have a strong Venusian personality in that they have a great love of beauty and pleasure (sexual and material). They're very charming in social situations, and like their sign of the scales, are very fair. Other Libra characteristics: cooperation, an artistic sense or ability, romance, narcissicism, indecisiveness, and flirtation.

Nothing about this sign makes me think of Stefan. He's not flirtatious and doesn't exhibit the love of luxury and love itself that is so integral to the Libran character.

Scorpio
Ahhhh and we've come to my favorite sign, MY sign! (LOL my birthday's the first of November, and I'm practically an archetype). Scorpios are mysterious creatures: very sensual, very intense, very secretive and very passionate. Very very. These are the type to never be taken alive. Just like a scorpion, they'd rather kill themselves than be killed by another. As the sign of extremes, they're prone to self-destruction as much as to the destruction of others. Other Scorpio characteristics: self-criticism, protectiveness, loyalty, sensuality, compassion, magnetism, ruthlessness, possessiveness, sadism and vindictiveness.

Ahhh Stefan definitely has a lot in common with this one. He's a very private person, very intense and loyal in an end all, be all way. He's protective of those he loves and is very sensual and self-critical. However, he seems to be lacking in the darkest of Scorpion characteristics: the vindictiveness and the ruthlessness. This is my second or third choice for his sun sign, but when it comes down to it, he's just not dark enough.

Sagittarius
Like an arrow arching toward the sky, a Sagittarian is always searching for the ideal. They love to learn and are ever seeking the great truths in life. They love to travel, so they never stay one place for long. They're very clear thinkers, but a little blunt with what they find. Other Sagittarian characteristics: optimism, enthusiasm, honesty, happy-go-lucky, impatience, indulgence, hotheadedness, and tactlessness.

Optimistic? Stefan? Happy-go-lucky? Stefan? This sign is just too carefree for our brooding Italian.

Capricorn
Ruling the area of careers and public life, Capricorns are all about ambition and hard work. There's always a goal ahead of them in their path of life, since they use a business approach to almost everything they do. They're very pragmatic and practical, too. ^^ Other Capricorn characteristics: cautious, a realistic outlook, scrupulous, conventionalism, traditional, critical, fatalistic, status seeking and unforgiving.

While I'd call Stefan very conventional, fatalistic and traditional, a Capricorn he is not. He doesn't seem goal-oriented at all and is certainly not status seeking.

Aquarius
Aquarians are the humanitarians of the zodiac. They always have their eye on the ideals of society. They love to work for the greater good, and make lots of friends and aquaintances in the process. They are the great visionaries of our world, but unfortunately, their eye on the big picture often keeps them from having close friends. Not that they fail at friendships, it's just not really their thing. Other Aquarian characteristics: individualism, eccentricity, thoughtfulness, independence, inventive, tactless, and unwillingness to fight for beliefs.

With his strict moral ideas on feeding and obsession with the idea of "right," Stefan definitely has an Aquarian edge to him. But in the long run, I feel Aquarius to be a too impersonal and insensitive sign for him.

Pisces
Pisces is one of the biggest feeling signs of the zodiac. Very sensitive, compassionate and artistic these fish are. They go with the flow and are incredibly hard to fight with since they don't stick up for themselves very often. Pisceans are also very prone to escapist behavior. Other Piscean characteristics: trusting, shy, romantic, gentle, intuitive, self-pitying, dependent, tempermental, and unrealistic.

As odd as it may sound to some Pisces is tied for second place choice with Scorpio. They may seem like very different signs, but being as they're both water signs, they have a lot more in common than one would think. Like a Pisces, Stefan's incredibly sensitive, compassionate, and fatalistic. However, his enormous amount of self-control and his stubborn streak (very scorpionic traits) definitely steer me away from diagnosing him as a Pisces.
